An Amazing Home Swap In The City Of Love

When I first considered home swapping, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But trading my Berlin apartment for a cozy place in Paris’ Le Marais turned out to be one of the most enriching travel experiences I’ve ever had. From the ease of settling in to the joy of living in a truly Parisian neighbourhood, this experience made me feel like I was temporarily living in Paris, rather than just visiting.

Home swapping isn’t something I had really considered until I joined nKoto remote, but if you really think about it, house swapping is pretty much like Airbnbs and Vrbos. Though it’s more of a two way exchange, the concept remains the same. So, when the opportunity came up to swap homes—me going to Paris and Davy, a fellow remote worker, to Berlin—it felt like the perfect way to experience a new city.

From the moment I arrived at Davy’s apartment in Le Marais, I knew this was going to be a different kind of trip. The apartment was lovely, filled with personal touches that made it feel like I was staying at a friend’s place rather than a stranger’s. Getting the keys was a breeze—Davy had left them with his lovely neighbour, and within minutes, I was settled in.

The apartment itself was perfect. There was a dedicated workspace, complete with a desk and fast Wi-Fi, making it easy to get into the flow of work when I needed to. But the real charm was in the details—the kitchen cupboards stocked with spices, the cozy living room that felt like home, and the beautiful views of the Marais, one of Paris’s most vibrant neighbourhoods. Living there was a dream. The area is full of history, art, and endless cafes, making it the ideal place to explore when I wasn’t working. It’s one thing to visit a city, but staying in someone’s home with all the comforts and quirks of one truly made me feel like I was living in Paris, even if just temporarily.

When it was time to leave, the process was just as smooth as when I arrived. I simply popped the key in the mailbox and headed back to Berlin. The whole experience was so seamless, it felt like I was leaving a second home rather than just another vacation spot. Unfortunately, I didn’t fall in love like Cameron Diaz did, but home swapping offered a unique way to immerse myself in the Parisian lifestyle, far beyond what a typical tourist might encounter.

I walked the same streets, shopped at the local markets, and even greeted neighbours. While I may not have found a rom-com romance, I did discover a newfound appreciation for this way of travel—where the line between being a visitor and a local blurs. If you’re a remote worker looking for a new way to travel, I can’t recommend house swapping enough.
